This morning Mark, Serena, and I went walking around the block. Well they are tall and have extremely long legs. For their one step I was taking three. By the time we were finished my legs were on fire and I was ready to go back to bed. But sleep again we did not.
Serena and I went to the bilingual school to be judges for their spelling bee. Today was the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students. They impressed me with their ability to pronounce and spell words in English. The teachers there are also bilingual and very very sweet. They took Serena and I to a bakery and talked with us in English thankfully. They gave me a gift for judging the spelling bee. So the first thing I have to take home from Mexico is an American Flag mug.
This evening we had a college age group over. We all played corn hole and Mark grilled steaks. I felt like I was back home in Southern Ohio. Well except for the fact that they were all speaking Spanish and eating guacamole and tortillas with their steaks while I just had barbeque sauce.
I definitely have two new friends though. Lili is about my age. She only knows as much English as I know Spanish. But we both want to learn from one another. So we stumbled through conversation, going back and forth between Spanish and English. It was a lot of fun talking with her and I hope to spend more time with her in the future. Another new friend of mine is Cesiah. She speaks English and Spanish fluently. She is about my sister’s age and has a 2 year old daughter, Irli. She was also a lot of fun and I am looking forward to seeing her again as well.
All of the people here have accepted me into their lives and I could not feel more welcome!
